Dental whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic dental procedures in the United States. Dr. Mafi wants you to have a healthy, beautiful smile. When you whiten your teeth here in San Diego, Dr. Mafi will help you keep them white the natural way by taking time to explain post-whitening maintenance and oral care to you.
Professional bleaching is the most common form of tooth whitening. When you visit her San Diego office, Dr. Mafi will be able to tell you if are suitable for the treatment.
Dental Whitening Procedure
It is important to Dr. Mafi that her patients in San Diego are comfortable with and well informed as to any dental procedures that they may be considering. Dr. Mafi will evaluate the level of whitening that is appropriate for your individual smile before taking the following steps:
- Patients must make 2-3 initial visits to Dr. Mafi’s San Diego dentist office so that she can do a pre-bleaching exam, take impressions for your bleaching trays and finally fit the custom bleaching trays. She takes an impression of your teeth at your first appointment.
- Dr. Mafi puts a rubber shield or gel on her patients’ gums to protect the soft tissue.
- She then applies the dental whitening product to your teeth, using specially made trays, which fit into your mouth like a gum-shield.
- Once Dr. Mafi has started the dental whitening treatment, San Diego patients will need to continue the treatment at home. This means applying the dental whitening product over 2-4 weeks, for 30 – 60 minutes at a time.
A dental whitening treatment with Dr. Mafi can usually be completed within 3-4 weeks.
Are There Side Effects to Dental Whitening?
Some people find that their teeth become sensitive to cold during or after a dental whitening treatment. Others find discomfort in the gums, sore throat or white patches on the gum line. However, these symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear within a few days of the dental whitening treatment’s conclusion.
How Long Does Dental Whitening Last?
Dental whitening can last up to three years, varying from person to person. The effect is less likely to last over an extended period if you smoke, eat or drink foods that can stain your teeth. Focusing on natural and preventive dentistry is Dr. Mafi’s specialty and she will advice you as to how to make your dental whitening results last longer. On your next visit to Dr. Mafi’s San Diego office, ask for her opinion regarding this cosmetic dentistry procedure.
